€750m saved in a decade of SEAI’s Sustainable Energy Awards

Energy savings of €750 million have been made by the 600 organisations that have participated in the Sustainable Energy Awards over the last decade. “These organisations have made massive savings. Given that between them they employ 400,000 people, it is impossible to underestimate the importance of this achievement.”said Dr Brian Motherway, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), speaking at the final Awards ceremony in Dublin last week.

Minister Rabbitte launches Bord na Móna Wind Farm

The Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Mr Pat Rabbitte, today launched the construction of a 40 megawatt wind farm by Bord na Móna at Bruckhana, Co. Tipperary.

Speaking at the launch the Minister said, “Ireland has a challenging EU renewable energy target to meet by 2020, which includes meeting 40% of electricity demand from renewable sources. We are making progress towards this target, however, and development of renewable generation of the scale we will see at Bruckhana is crucial for maintaining the rate of build necessary to achieve our EU target.”

Tesco to address food wastage in the UK



Supermarket chain Tesco is to rethink some of its food promotions after finding a large amount of its produce goes to waste.

The British retailer, which has 150 stores in Ireland, has revealed food waste figures for its UK operations for the first time, revealing that 68 per cent of salad to be sold in bags is thrown out – 35% of it in the home.

Some 40 per cent of apples are wasted, as are just under half of bakery items. A quarter of grapes are wasted, and a fifth of all bananas are unused.
